EPA and DHA are converted from a-linolenic acid, which is a large makeup of omega-3 fatty acids, and is a relatively inefficient process (Berquin et al., 2008). These molecules have numerous health benefits and have been studied in numerous research experiments including: cancer, fetal brain development, depression, and cardiovascular disease. Since nearly 25% of western countries’ population does not eat fish, which is a very good source of omega-3, it has been supplemented into other foods through fish oils. There is also an imbalance of omega-6 to omega-3 ratio which has led to increased levels of cardiovascular disease in many adults (Lucas, 2006). There should be a strong effort to include the appropriate blend of omega-3 in the human diet as a method to increase health and maintain well balanced diet.

In particular, I went to Whole Foods and found a pharmaceutical grade fish oil that included 400mg EPA and 200mg DHA that was within my budget.
