“You are what you eat” is proved to be true. Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote in 1826 “Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante.” that “Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es. [Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are].” Too much or too little of nutrition is not good for health. The proper well-balanced diet and proper fitness build the healthy body. Therefore, it is important to know how to stay healthy to avoid the diseases. This paper focuses on the concept of nutrition related to healthy eating and the dietary guidelines as well as its impact on unhealthy eating. The excess or less nutrition is considered the unhealthy eating. There are many diet-related chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia). However, this paper will focus only three exemplars: Obesity and Type II diabetes are the exemplars of the excess nutrition while Anorexia is the exemplar for the insufficient nutrition.
The Food is the human basic need. Food contains variety of nutrients, which is essential to our bodies. Nutrition is necessary to support the activities of day-to-day living. Nutrients in the food help maintaining normal growth and development, tissue maintenance and repair, cellular metabolism, and organ function (Potter, 2012, p.996).
