We might need the food for our appetite satisfaction, but normal body function requires a regular food intake for its growth, metabolism and repair (The Open University, 2015a). Food provides a constant supply of needed nutrients such carbohydrates, proteins, fats and not excluding vitamins, minerals and water. They boost our body with energy to keep us going. Precisely only carbohydrates and fats are body‘s fuel, proteins not excluded, but they are required more importantly for body structures.
Carbohydrates are the main source of calories in everyday diet. They include simple sugars and more complex form starch and glycogen (The Open University, 2015c). Their presence is in rich food such as flour, potatoes, rice, pasta and pulses. Carbohydrates are converted into blood sugar through the process of digestion. Glucose is the only energy source sugar in human cells which affect blood sugar level. Glycogen as polysaccharides is derived from plants and stored in the liver and muscle tissue. Starchy food such potatoes are a good source of fibre which as the indigestible component is keeping our bowel active and healthy.

Damaging effect of malnutrition prevent the body from growing and developing. In early life can result in stunting what means lower than expected height for a given age (The Open University, 2015f). Stunting has unfortunately long lasting effects. After 2 years of age is irreversible. Children are susceptible to infectious diseases due to the underdeveloped immune system. Lost infancy development affects later on the cognitive abilities, education and economic potential in later life.
Even though the reason why we eat, it is not always empty stomach and our eating behaviour is down to influences from many factors. There are no doubts that food plays inherent part of our life and the importance of eating is necessity for everyday survival.
